It was gorgeous outside, and 86 degrees as well with a cool breeze from the waterfront. I don’t know what more you could ask for on such a trip.

We made the trip for just about $50 for both of us combined: gas was $25, we were minimalists on food to the tune of less than $15 (and that was even with a visit to Chipotle!), and our light rail ride was $10 for 2 tickets. Not bad for a day that enabled us to take the following photos…

It was a grand time, as we walked on the beach and enjoyed some time in their rented condo. It was great to get around 15 people together and see friends…I haven’t been able to relax like that for awhile.

The atmosphere was neat, the ocean was beautiful and it was only an hour and thirty minutes from Centralia. Not bad.

Travel tip: Stay away from Dugan’s Pizza. The food is mediocre, they charge for a pitcher of water, and there was only one server on duty which meant our order was screwed up. Pricey, too, as is the case with most food joints in tourist towns.

This also means I had a living-room seat, quite literally, to watch the 2010 Centralia Summerfest Parade to celebrate our nation’s independence. I did end up venturing outside the apartment and up a few city blocks, and took the opportunity to shoot photos of anything and everything, really.

It was a neat little parade, featuring a host of community groups and drawing a decent-sized crowd. Everyone arrived in droves shortly before the parade started at 4 p.m., and once it was over, everyone scattered quickly.

Even though the time barely qualified as an extended weekend, it was still good to see everyone there for the first time in nearly ten months.

We hung around the house a lot, went for a couple scenic drives, played some disc golf — and I even went and shot photos of the football gathering I helped institute in 2008.

All in all, it was a great weekend that ended too quickly. Here are some photos…enjoy!

From Springfield, Missouri to Portland, Denver and even points beyond there, this collection has it all as it tells the story of the year 2009 for me in photos. Note that all of these aren’t going to have the best artistic quality, but there is a story behind each one.

Fireworks ring in the New Year as Springfield, MO welcomes 2009 with a bang. The Sleet Bowl: Yellow beat Red in a flag football battle played on packed sleet and ice...of course the field turned to mud after the game. Springfield was home to many beautiful sunsets, and this March shot in Doling Park is evidence of that fact. Cocoa was our family's first pet, a hyperactive chocolate lab who couldn't bear to sit still for any length of time. We miss ya buddy! A powerful rainstorm dumped buckets over Republic, Missouri, then cleared just long enough for me to take a photo of this sunset in April. Kickoff return touchdowns were my forte in flag football. I had a few of them during our regular Sunday gatherings. Sunsets are a recurring theme in my photos. This one was shot just north of Springfield near Ebenezer, just off MO-13. Crimson House Ministries was my home church during my time in Springfield. If you're in the area, check it out at 1616 N. Robberson Avenue. I visited the Oldfield Opry for a video story in June and was immediately enraptured by the skill and tight harmony of the music played there. It's a one-of-a-kind experience. I visited the Northwest again in June, and attended the COGOP Young Adults retreat. This was all of us...it was one of the best camps I ever attended. During my visit home, I also made a 4th of July trip to the coast. The sun made a cool reflection off the water, aided by diffusion from the clouds. This is the Astoria-Megler Bridge in Astoria, Oregon. I was fortunate enough to get this beautiful shot right before the townspeople started shooting fireworks. In my last SOFA flag football game in late July, I threw the game-winning TD pass to Jerome. Here was the group...notice our team uniforms. My drive home in August was not without its surreal moments -- such as this lightning strike dwarfing the distant town of Sidney, Nebraska and creating an awesome light show for the travelers on I-80. The Perrine Bridge in Twin Falls, Idaho is the only structure in the U.S. where BASE jumping is legal. Here a young woman takes full advantage of that, and throws herself into the Snake River Canyon. Just west of Twin Falls, the Idaho sunset welcomes me to the Pacific Northwest in early August. Summer is winding down. My first sporting event upon my return to the Northwest was a Mariners game. The sunset there was beautiful too, and I couldn't resist getting a shot of it. Major blur, but the photo's still cool. I hung out the side of Michael Perozzo's jeep on I-5 southbound in Seattle to get this one. I'm still alive to tell about it! I hiked up Hamilton Mountain in the Gorge in early September, intensifying my desire to get outside more and hike the Gorge more often. Here's just a cool visual effect. One October night, I walked around downtown Portland grabbing random photos, and this is one of them: a MAX train traversing the Steel Bridge on its way downtown. The Portland Trail Blazers played an exhibition game at Memorial Coliseum and sold every ticket for $19.70. They would fall to the Suns in a high-scoring battle. October brings with it Autumn, and the Northwest is one of the best places to take it in. This is Lions Island in Longview, Washington, one of my favorite fall strolls. In November, I traveled to Denver for job training and thoroughly enjoyed taking photos of downtown. Here is Union Station and a view down the 16th Street Mall. My friend Brian and I headed to the Civil War football game in early December. It was here at Autzen that the Ducks punched their ticket to the Rose Bowl by defeating Oregon State, 37-33. Oregon RB LeGarrette Blount hands roses to fans after their Civil War victory. This game was my first ever at Autzen Stadium — and what a first game it was, especially with me being such a longtime Quacker Backer.

One of the most beautiful places to visit when the season rolls around is Lake Sacajawea in Longview, Washington.

My mom has said time after time that the park encircling the lake is one of her favorite spots to visit in autumn. Since she can’t take in the view for herself this year, I decided to hop in my car and head on up to my hometown to capture the fall spectrum.
