Longview, Washington’s Great Cardboard Regatta

I caught about ten minutes of the Great Cardboard Regatta in my hometown of Longview, WA as I was driving to the coast on July 4. What an excellent, fun event for the folks of the town back there to enjoy.

Basically the gist of the entire event was for people to come get some free cardboard form the lot at the Daily News (they sponsored the event along with Norpac), and build a boat from it however they so chose. Teams would then use their completed boat to race against other teams at Lake Sacajawea.

From what I saw of the event, it was a massive amount of fun. People absolutely PACKED the banks of the lake to watch the shenanigans, and it seemed like the participants had a lot of fun with the event.

The boats ranged from cardboard canoes to a floating scale model of Qwest Field. Some people built houseboats, others built a giant rubber duck that was a hit with the crowd but sank spectacularly.

I wish I could have stayed to see the end, but the Cardboard Regatta looked to be a fun event for a town that has needed something like that for a while. Major props to the Daily News for helping put that event on…it looked like a major success.

If I would have known about the event in advance, I would have entered the contest. I’d have built a boat with a bunch of holes in the bottom and called it Gannett.
