My Appreciation For Petra Has Increased

I have to hand it to my parents for ensuring that I was raised in a Christian home, taught to the best of their knowledge what was morally and Biblically correct, and fed a steady stream of cheesy music to reinforce those teachings.

But among that cheesy music, there was some that stood out…none more than the music of the band Petra.

I can remember hearing their 80s hits such as “Not of This World” and “More Power To Ya” played consistently on our local Christian station and I loved it. Then they moved onto a more vibrant rock sound with their albums in the early 90s…I especially remember hearing the entire cassette tape of Beyond Belief being played en route to church in Vancouver.

My love for Petra has come full circle. Last week, I used some store credit I had saved up, and bought Petraphonics — a collection of the band’s hits while signed to the Star Song label. Those were the songs I remember most while driving around Longview, but they mean more to me now.

I have listened to the album in it’s entirety twice and I have been very blessed by the words of encouragement in the Christian faith, and also their unabashed stand for Christ. It has quickly become one of my favorite albums.

I do have to pull away from it and get back to the cheese every now and then, but man am I glad I picked up Petraphonics. $8 is a real bargain too!
