A good friend and former colleague of mine sent me an excellent article today — it highlights how a New York Times video reporter made the jump from TV journalism into Internet video.
It’s quite a compelling read, and although the jump for him was a bit different, my story is a bit similar as I had dabbled a bit in TV journalism before coming to work full-time as a multimedia journalist at our newspaper in Springfield, Missouri.
Personally, I think my job is much more satisfying than it could ever be if I worked in TV news. The amount of creative control, no strict package length requirement, and a different work environment altogether make the job a bit less chaotic for me — and it allows me to put a greater focus on my content than I would if I were doing the same thing for TV.
It is really amazing to see the power of the Internet changing journalism, and I still wonder if media outlets far and wide — whether TV stations or newspapers — will ride the wave or be engulfed by it.
