SPRINGFIELD, Mo, (UP) — Someone call out the fire department. Anyone who stepped into the quarterback position was hot today. But one team was able to claim victory in the biggest SOFA shootout so far, as the Original Six hung 64 on New School for a 13-point victory.
Chris Brewer continued his stellar play at quarterback, throwing for five touchdowns and running in a two-point conversion. He was 25-for-33 with 514 yards and no interceptions. He has now thrown 126 passes without an interception, after throwing three in a game seven weeks ago.
Brewer’s mojo also rubbed off onto Pete Hendricks, who went 10-for-16 for 205 yards and two touchdowns. One of Hendricks’ touchdowns was an absolute bullet to Brewer in the endzone on a crossing pattern. Hendricks also busted out of the gate as a kick returner and wide receiver, going for two scores on the day.
Jerome Nakagawa enjoyed a feast at wide receiver, as did Matt Baker. Nakagawa hauled in two touchdowns to increase his league lead to 28, and Baker reveled in his first game back in four weeks as he scored three on the day as the swingman for both teams.
Ian McGibboney hauled in a long pass for the O-6′s second touchdown of the day as Brewer led him to the middle of the field, where he beat the coverage of Josh Thompson for a 52-yard touchdown.
Emily Nakayama scored her sixth TD of the year as Brewer handed to her on a shotgun draw from five yards out, giving the O-6 the initial lead.
Thompson came back down to earth today, only catching seven passes for 85 yards for New School. Kurk Brown was actually the leading receiver on the day with three touchdown catches, and twelve receptions for 275 yards.
A scary moment occurred with Red leading 48-34, and twelve minutes to go in the game. Brewer went to pull Baker’s flag after Matt had caught a pass, and Thompson’s perfectly executed screen block caught Brewer in the throat. He finished the game, and postgame X-rays were negative.
Next week a rule change goes into effect where the first-down markers will be placed every 25 yards instead of 20, in order to prevent another shootout.
