Blogaroni Voting Closed; Meetup February 26

Fellow Springfield bloggers–

Larry over at Simple Thoughts of a Complex Mind has announced the end to voting in this year’s Blogaronis. The results will be tallied and presented at a meetup at the Patton Alley Pub on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Larry’s inviting all bloggers and blog readers to join in an awards show type meeting.

Considering I was nominated for Best New Blog, I don’t think I will win, but it was great to be nominated. Thanks to the kind souls who put my name on the list and welcomed me into the Springfield blogging community.

I’ll see you all at the Pub on the 26th. I may be the youngest guy there who doesn’t drink. :)

Oh Yeah, Today Was Actually Valentine’s Day

Yeah, that

Chalk up my living the single life to not even paying any attention to the fact that today — er, yesterday, since it’s now 2:13 AM — was Valentine’s day.

While it means that yes, I didn’t have to spend any money that I don’t currently have on someone, it also means that I don’t have anyone to spend any money I don’t have on. Kinda sad when I think about it that way, but really honestly at second glance I am in no position to even remotely search for the love of my life at this point in time. I’ve got some stuff I need to work out first.

But time is growing short. Bear with me here as we calculate this together.

According to Table 27 of the CDC’s Chartbook For Trends in the Health of Americans, since I was born in the same era that made Prince a star and Olivia Newton John was getting physical with everyone, my life expectancy is 70.7 years.

70.7 years, let’s just round up to 71 to make this easier and more optimistic. So 71 years x 365 = 25,915 days to live.

My current age is 23 years and roughly 200 days. 23 x 365 + 200 = 8,595 days that I’ve already lived.

Now take that 25,915 days that I can be expected to be on this earth and figure that 8,595 of them are gone already and I’VE ALREADY LIVED 33.1 PERCENT OF MY LIFE WITHOUT HAVING FOUND THE RIGHT ONE FOR ME.

My situation is dire, and I will leave it at that.

On another note, have any of you ever seen the movie The Ringer? I find it quite hilarious and I must admit I am not with the times — I saw this movie for the first time a week ago.

I wish I could get a hug from Katherine Heigl about now. Sigh.

God Bless Ken Jennings

Remember Ken Jennings? You know, the guy who won 74 straight Jeopardy games back in ‘03 or ‘04? Yeah, that guy.

I love this video of him.

That is the funniest thing I have ever seen come out of the 7-9 PM block of programming, ever.

Tulsa’s Really Not A Bad Place

I had to drive out to Tulsa, Oklahoma today to pick up my mother from the airport. When flying to points west, it’s always cheaper to fly out of Tulsa (unless you get some insane deal) than Springfield. By at least $150.

So I drove the three hours and 181 miles west and encountered some more ice, but the main roadways were clear. It was full speed ahead.

Then I saw this right before I hit Vinita, Oklahoma, home of Dr. Phil:

The Sun Makes a Cameo

That’s right, the sun made a nice little cameo appearance but it was kinda tough to enjoy it because the sun sets in the west and that’s the general direction I had to travel.

Mom called me while I was about 30 miles from Tulsa and told me her flight would be delayed until 8 PM. So I decided to take a detour and visit the Woodland Hills Mall, and more specifically, the Apple Store. I hadn’t been in an Apple Store since I worked at the one at Washington Square. I took a gander at, and tried out, the new MacBook Air. Stunning little thing, it is. But I don’t find it useful. It’s only pleasing to the eyes, and at this point I think it only serves as a prototype for the laptop of the future.

After my visit to the mall I headed out to the airport, which was only about 8 miles away, and waited there for Mom. Cris Birch called and we talked about his plans to get married soon. Dude’s only 20 and he’s beat me to marriage already. I’m a real chump.

I drove Mom back home and kinda scared her a bit when I decided to shortcut onto MO Hwy. 174, a very boring route into Republic that cuts off at least 15 minutes travel time. Mom spotted ice everywhere, I kept driving and got us home safe. :)

Now it’s bedtime.

And This Is What It Looks Like At Night

One final photo for the day. I stepped out on my lawn that felt more like a bumpy skating rink (Zamboni, anyone?) and shot this photo from my yard. No color enhancement or anything, no flash, just set the camera down on top of my garbage can and shot away. This is the result.

Ice Storm At Night

While I was out there, I heard a multitude of sirens and tree branches crashing all around me. I hope no one is hurt or too severely affected by all of this.

Tomorrow we’ll get a great look at the damage. Pray for me, I have an appointment then I have to pick up Mom in Tulsa.

Just To Show You How Much Ice We Have

Check this out. I snapped this off the tree in front of my house. This is insane.

Too Much Ice

And let’s see how much ice is on there compared to the size of my finger.

Finger vs. Ice

And it’s still coming down. Expected to until midnight. Tree branches have been snapping for the past half hour, including one in my backyard. House still intact, power is still on, and we’re having a wonderful time in the Spirit, as they say in church. :)

MANICOTTI TIME!!!! I’m gonna sit in on Jason W’s liveblog of Springfield City Council’s meeting tonight (nice job with the blogs by the way J).

Freezing Rain Photos From My House

UPDATE 5:17 PM - Freezing rain is falling again. I would guesstimate that we have a half an inch on the ground and trees already. Wouldn’t be surprised to lose power (and heat) soon. Fortunately everyone is saying this will end by midnight.

UPDATE 1:17 PM - Sleet is falling hard and fast…and now it’s not. Weird.

It’s a wonder our power is even still on and I am able to upload these. This is insane, even though it’s not near as insane as the January 2007 ice storm. The roads are completely covered locally though.

This sign is telling everyone what to do with their daily routines today. Just go home, folks.

More photos after the jump.

Freezing Rain & Thunder: A Horrible Combination

They’ve been rattling off the list of school closures on KTTS for over two minutes now. It’s getting bad outside, we’ve got some massive thunder outside and the ice is already building up.

I pray we don’t lose power. I would hate to be without heat (and to a lesser extent, entertainment).

They’re also saying most of the roads are impassable and are urging people to stay home from work and call it a day already. And it’s only 9 minutes until 8 AM.

Okay, they just now got done with the list of school closings. That took them four minutes. Wow.

I may have to snap some photos later.

Unbelievable Hockey Accident

Richard Zednik, a former Portland Winter Hawk and current Florida Panthers hockey player whom many Winter Hawk fans grew to love during his time in the Rose City, was involved in a serious freak accident on the ice this weekend. Zednik was cut in the neck by the skate of a teammate Olli Jokinen while Jokinen fell forward after checking one of the Buffalo Sabres.

This from the AP:

Blood gushed from Zednik’s neck after he was hurt midway through the third period of Buffalo’s 5-3 victory, creating a frightening moment that delayed the game for about 15 minutes. There was also a brief discussion about postponing the game altogether.

Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres’ zone, when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur. Jokinen fell head-first to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik directly on the side of the neck.

Clutching his neck, Zednik raced to the Florida bench, leaving a long trail of blood. When he arrived, he nearly fell into the arms of a team trainer, who quickly applied a towel to the cut. Zednik was then helped off the ice by the trainer and teammate Jassen Cullimore, and escorted to the Panthers’ dressing room.

There is a video on Youtube of the incident, and even though it doesn’t show in grisly detail what happened, it’s worth a look to get a feel for what happened. I watched it and didn’t get weak to my stomach, but I hurt for the guy after watching the replays.

Still that being said, if you don’t like blood, I won’t encourage you to click the play button.

Also worth noting is a photo taken from the stands with a cell phone that shows just how much blood was on the ice. They had to bring the Zamboni back out and the game was delayed for 15 minutes. (Again, if you don’t like blood, don’t look.)

What a trooper to still be able to skate over to the bench and keep his wits about him for a brief period of time. Let’s all hope and pray he recovers in a timely manner.

The 54321: February 10, 2008 Edition

Check out this week’s 54321, featuring mainly tracks that I discovered just in the past week. I have a feeling Chromeo and Ratatat are going to become personal favorites of mine.
