Freezing Rain Photos From My House

UPDATE 5:17 PM - Freezing rain is falling again. I would guesstimate that we have a half an inch on the ground and trees already. Wouldn’t be surprised to lose power (and heat) soon. Fortunately everyone is saying this will end by midnight.

UPDATE 1:17 PM - Sleet is falling hard and fast…and now it’s not. Weird.

It’s a wonder our power is even still on and I am able to upload these. This is insane, even though it’s not near as insane as the January 2007 ice storm. The roads are completely covered locally though.

This sign is telling everyone what to do with their daily routines today. Just go home, folks.

More photos after the jump.

And there’s more to come. Oh joy.

  1. I LOVE those! We didn’t even get any snow. I would have settled for an ice storm. They are nasty but really pretty. At least it looks like underground power lines!

  2. You got that right when you said nasty but pretty. Only thing I hate is having the satellite out so I can’t get any local news updates. KY3, our local NBC affiliate, lost its internet connection around 8 this morning so I can’t get weather updates from them at all.

Hi Chris it is a pretty sight.. but a lot of aggravation when you have to go out in it.
    Actually scary..can’t get your footage.
    Also harmful on the gutters.
We installed a heating wire in ours so when this happens it melts the ice. We have it wired into the outside outlet. We just flip a switch and its on. Very good for the gutters.

When its all over and done with there will be a lot of clean up from all the broken branches and twigs.
    Keep safe.

  4. Will do Brenda!

Do you guys get a lot of ice or is it mainly snow up there?

Your pictures are gorgeous. Would not like having to drive in that stuff. Here in Washington, as you well know, it’s mostly rain. (saw your beautiful Mom this past weekend.)

Its mostly snow. But there are times we do get ice.
When the snow melts off the roof it causes a lot of ice sicles. Thats when the wire comes in handy. It melts the snow and the ice that forms there and it runs off down the down spout. Saves the gutters from the weight which sometimes pull the gutters from the roof.
We have a roof rake to help get the heavy snow off the roof. Thats not good for the roof or the gutters.

Chris, if you want the snow in your photos to appear white instead of gray, try adding about two stops of exposure compensation. On your Sony DSC-P72, access the menu, change from Auto to Program, then go to the plus/minus symbol, and change it to 2 or 1 and two thirds.

  8. Thanks for the tip Dan…

…but it wasn’t snow. It was actually a dull-gray looking sleet.

  9. Dans a photo snob.

  10. Hahahaha. I like Dan’s expertise though. He has persuaded me to make a purchase (Pentax K100D Super) later in the year. It’ll drop in price by then too.

Dan is by far the superior PHOTOgrapher.
