Tithing Question

So I received my first paycheck yesterday. Boy was I ever happy…it feels good to finally have a steady source of income since I’ve been out of the Air Force. Only question was, since the Bible directs that we give ten percent of our increase to the Lord, how do we do so? Do we give 10% of our entire increase before taxes or after???

I called my Dad about this today and asked him what he would do. He said as a personal rule he pays tithes on the gross (before taxes). Which made sense to me…even though the government is screwing me out of my money, Jesus isn’t. It’s God that blessed me with the job in the first place, so I figure every hour I work is dedicated to Him anyway. So it’s only natural I should give him 10% of what I make in total.

That way, as Dad put it, what I put into the system won’t be re-tithed when I need it later (Social Security, Medicare, etc.).

Dad is a very wise man. It took him awhile to get thatway but he is now and I’m thankful for it.

personally, i tithe on what I actually recieve and then I tithe what I get back from the gov’t

  2. Curious, good point. I asked my dad if that was good as well and he said basically either way worked. Increase is increase whether it’s received from an employer now or from the federal government when we turn 65.

Thanks for the comment man, God bless.

I would personally do it the way your dad said. He is a smart guy and that always made the most sense to me too. That way you have your tax return with no extra brain work rather than what laptop you are going to buy with it. :)

  4. YEP, your dad is very wise Chris.
It is good that you have $ coming to you now. John

Okay your dad is a very smart man, however it was Bill Stockham that taught us how to tithe according to scripture. Tithing on the gross covers whether you get a tax return or not. It is God’s and we give back to God what is rightfully His. Thanks Mr. Bill!

The Army pays me so little that the difference in tithe between net and gross comes to about $1.73 Woohoo!
