Tonight I got the plane tickets for Aftan and I to fly down to see my parents in Missouri. We” be flying down March 26 and basically spend a day in transit, and get to spend the 27th, 28th and part of the 29th with my family.
I’m really excited about the trip…I haven’t seen my parents since I stopped in during my move to Oregon, and Aftan hasn’t had the opportunity to meet them yet. So I figured that I could take a day off of work and Aftan figured she could use half of her spring break to visit and meet my folks. Wish Jason was gonna be there, it would be a riot to have the whole gang at the ‘rents house.
Tons of stuff to do and see while we’re there too, so the trip is gonna be major fun. Lambert’s Cafe, the Fantastic Caverns (which I have never been to), the Bass Pro Shops store, the Conservation Center and a ton of more places to visit. It’s gonna be great.
Consider that I will have moved into my new apartment nine days before the trip, and you’ve got an exciting second half of March coming up.
By now we have all seen the indelible images and news stories broadcast to us by the wonder that is the popular media. Britney Spears has shaved her head. She’s off to a rehab clinic. She bailed on the rehab clinic. Now she’s back in rehab. Yada yada yada, on the reports drone.
I think the world gets some sort of sick pleasure out of watching someone like Britney go through the initial stages of a nervous breakdown. I’ve seen people point and laugh at the images like they are the funniest thing they’ve seen all day. Others seem transfixed, wondering what’s going to happen next. Leave it to people who have no business meddling in Britney’s daily life to follow her around and bring each and every sad development to a public that is all too eager to eat it all up.
No, I’m not a Britney fan. Yes, I did laugh at first when I saw the photos of her shaving her head. But after days of hearing about what has happened to someone who seemed to have their life so in order a short time ago, it’s overkill.
The world needs to respect the fact she is a human being like the rest of us, and someone close to her needs to step in and give the poor girl some help. As for us, the general public, we would do well to keep her in our prayers…as well as the countless other people who suffer from broken homes and lives, whose stories go unreported.
Here’s to hoping Britney Spears turns her life around.
It’s 1:36 AM and yes, I have to be at work at 9. Don’t know why I’m blogging but I guess I wanted to ask if everyone’s alive out there. You’ve all been quiet for the past few days.
I’m going to bed now…catch you tomorrow!
My church has been putting me to work recently. I like getting involved and there’s nothing I like more than being able to contribute some great stuff whether it be graphics, video editing, helping with the projector every once in awhile, you name it.
My first major task was creating a series of designs for badges staff members at Camp Wa-Ri-Ki will be wearing. The winning design, picked by a panel of church leadership, is pictured to the left (click on it to get a larger view). What we’re gonna do is get luggage ID holders, print out these ID badges on cardstock and save a bit of money while looking every bit professional. Thank God for Photoshop…seriously. I’m by no means a Photoshop guru but I do like to get my hands dirty every now and then.
With that project out of the way, I’m now editing a video that many of us have collaborated on. It’s called Soul Seekers and it directly coincides with the theme Rainier came up with for Winter Retreat. I can’t tell you much about it because it’s going to premiere at Wa-Ri-Ki, but I will gladly say it is one of the first productions in a Church of God of Prophecy-affiliated church to boast true high definition (1080i at 24 frames per second). Because it’s HD instead of standard video, it’s going to take me awhile to edit, even on my high-end computer system. But I’ll have it done before Wa-Ri-Ki, and you can bet I’ll put the video and a nice outtake reel on my site.
Hope you all are doing great out there…I’m enjoying my time off relaxing and shooting the breeze. God bless!
Yesterday was an awesome church service. Bishop Don Knoblich, Washington state’s presiding bishop for COGOP, spoke and gave a good message. Chris and Siu May boosted Junior Camp, and from what I saw they’ve really got a good handle on the Junior camp ministry. We had a packed house, I don’t know the exact number but we filled the Hathaway Elementary School cafeteria (the building we’re currently renting) and even though the place is somewhat small, it was nice to see standing-room only.
Our church has a lot of kids. I counted about twenty there yesterday. New Horizons has historically had a thriving children’s ministry, and it’s in large part due to the bus ministry our church has. We have volunteers willing to drive all around Vancouver, Camas and Washougal to pick up kids so they can come to church. How awesome is that. Not too many churches our size have the resources for a bus ministry, but ever since we were the Vancouver church in the early 90’s we’ve had the people and cash to operate a 15-passenger van for the kids and youth.

Tonight Aftan and I attended Porn Nation at the LaSells Stewart Center here at OSU. The title sounded interesting, and the discussion definitely was. Michael Leahy, a former sex addict now turned Christian and public speaker, used his public forum to not so much inform a packed house about the evils of pornography in today’s culture, but rather to make people aware of how their actions (in this case, exposing themselves and others to pornography) affect their future.
What was so great about the presentation was the fact he didn’t even talk about how pornography should be banned, limited or censored in any form. By directly telling the crowd that it’s a conscious direct choice whether to entertain their sexual thoughts or not, and not making excuses for himself as to why he was a sex addict, he addressed the problem with pornography as the consumers that support the industry rather than the industry itself. Without anyone to partake in it, pornography would not have as big a stranglehold on popular culture that it does now.
Equally, if not more, impressive was how Leahy offered to share his faith with the students in a non-judgmental way, and offered a four-minute break for those who needed to use the restroom, stand up and stretch or just wanted to leave. Few left and most stayed, and it was great to see how responsive the audience was when he shared his faith in Jesus Christ and how he is now free from the hold porn had on his life. He offered everyone a chance to pray with him and encouraged them to read the Word and give Christianity a chance. I was personally impressed by the students, who listened intently to his every word.
Great speaker, great event and it was refreshing to hear a Christian perspective on a popular subject such as porn that was non-judgmental, personal and very entertaining.

Turns out I didn’t have to work today. That’s good and bad. I was so dog tired yesterday, I think the quick turnaround from working Friday night 2-11 to Saturday 9-6 got to me. It’s good because I got to rest, and then I went into Longview to cash my checks I got over Christmas, as well as my first paycheck. Then Ryan and I hung out for a bit at Common Ground coffee shop on 14th in Longview. Always good to see and hang out with him.
Speaking of which, there’s no Bank of America here in St. Helens or Scappoose. I have to either drive to Hillsboro or Rainier, which are at least 25 miles away from where I now live. Sucky.
Let me get a piece of good news out of the way. You all have travailed with me through my journey to get an apartment. That journey is now over, as I found a great one in Hillsboro over by the airport and Intel campus. It’s $700 a month with a 6-month lease, which suits me perfect. They also have free Verizon high-speed internet and Comcast extended cable. Nice deal. So tomorrow I sign the lease. Praise God.
Changing gears completely…

So I received my first paycheck yesterday. Boy was I ever happy…it feels good to finally have a steady source of income since I’ve been out of the Air Force. Only question was, since the Bible directs that we give ten percent of our increase to the Lord, how do we do so? Do we give 10% of our entire increase before taxes or after???
I called my Dad about this today and asked him what he would do. He said as a personal rule he pays tithes on the gross (before taxes). Which made sense to me…even though the government is screwing me out of my money, Jesus isn’t. It’s God that blessed me with the job in the first place, so I figure every hour I work is dedicated to Him anyway. So it’s only natural I should give him 10% of what I make in total.
That way, as Dad put it, what I put into the system won’t be re-tithed when I need it later (Social Security, Medicare, etc.).
Dad is a very wise man. It took him awhile to get thatway but he is now and I’m thankful for it.
Sorry I’ve been really busy over the past few days. Reading two-day-old blog posts is not fun, I realize that. So here’s a new one to tell you I’ve been busy and will update you all on what’s been going on in my life, tonight.
Before I go, let me just say I had a fun time in Corvallis with Aftan yesterday. I love her so much.
Now I’m back and gotta run to work soon. Peace!
The bad news first. The apartment deal fell through. Oh well…turns out the place was an affordable housing community and I’m overqualified. Even though it sucks to not have housing yet, it’s pretty cool to be stable enough financially to where I am considered overqualified for something.
Already I’ve found some good alternatives. There’s one that offers free cable and high speed internet. I’m sold on it already, and I’m going there tomorrow to check it out. It’s about 15 minutes the other way from work, still in Hillsboro, right by the Intel and Nike campuses.
Okay, for the good news now. I get to visit Aftan tomorrow night into Thursday. Pray for a safe trip. I’ll see her this week and then head back down there for Valentine’s Day next week. It’s gonna be great.
That’s all for now. I’m headed into Portland to chill with Michael P. after the Blazer game.
