Songs That Bring Back Memories

Right now, I’m listening to a song that Winamp randomly picked from my playlist of over 2,100 songs. I absolutely love it…”It’s Alright” by Third Day. It bears special significance to me because it reminds me of the time I came home on leave from my Air Force duties in Portugal to work Washington State COGOP’s Winter Retreat and watch the Super Bowl with commercials. My dad, brother and I had to cross the Columbia River to get over to Kelso, Washington (we lived in Rainier, Oregon) but the Lewis and Clark Bridge was closed. We ended up waiting in line for this dinky ferry that only holds twelve cars to pick us up and take us across…I thought I was gonna die when we boarded that thing. We watched the Super Bowl at church, thank God we missed the Janet Nipple Slip, then we went home…back across the ferry. It was the night before I had to leave and fly 13 hours halfway across the globe…so we just had some good talk time while we drove down State Route 4 in Washington back toward the ferry. We were playing music from the local Christian station…they had some more mellow music going, and some of my personal favorites. They played “Worlds Apart” by Jars of Clay and some other stuff by Caedmon’s Call, Silers Bald, etc. I had never heard “It’s Alright” that I could remember, but I loved it and for days it stuck in my mind like a lance.

Don’t know why, but every time I hear it, it reminds me of that drive to the ferry, waiting in line for the boat and talking, sharing life experiences with my dad and brother. It was a lot of fun and it will be awhile before I experience anything like that again.

Yeah, I still miss the days when my family was all together, when I was younger…things were awesome back then.

Here are the lyrics to the song:

Your letter said that you were leaving
But you didn’t know how long
I have never stopped believing
That one day you would return
And though waiting is the hardest
Part of everything I do
I do confess it’s getting better
Knowing I will be with you

It’s alright
It’s okay
I won’t worry about tomorrow
For it brings me one more day
Closer than I was to you

Now the question isn’t “will you”
What I want to know is “when”
If it’s one day or a million
I will wait for you ’til then
So I’m holding on to your words
And the promises you’ve made
There is not one you have broken
There’s not one I didn’t take

Your letter said that you were leaving
But you didn’t know how long
I will never stop believing
I know one day you will return
