Day 3: September 15, 2004 - Bismarck, ND to Madison, WI

NOTE: This is my account of Day 3 of my trip–straight from the journal I took while traveling.

Left Bismarck today around 7:30 AM. I think 7:30 has been my starting time every day, which would allow be about 12 hours of travel time with two to three hours of rest before I bed down for the night.

The trip has been great so far, but this morning was BORING. That hotel clerk was right. I could have taken my hand off the steering wheel and still driven straight from Bismarck to Fargo. Three hours and no curves on the road….I’m gonna tell everyone to not drive I-94 through North Dakota unless they need to. The state tree here is the telephone pole.

Fargo is just off the freeway, so I didn’t see much of it. Instead I breezed right into Minnesota and the rain came down again, and HARD. I reached Fergus Falls and Annandale, then the rain started to let up before I reached Minneapolis.

Minneapolis is huge, and I think St. Paul is bigger–I could be wrong though. The area is neat, but I would hate to live here in the wintertime. It’s September and the thermometer outside the bank already reads 47 degrees. Oh yeah, I tried finding my friend Jeremy up in Fridley but he bailed on me after telling me where to go. That sucked, but I’ve had worse stuff happen to me. I press on.

Right after passing through St. Paul, I hit Wisconsin. Some beautiful country to drive through. I stopped at a McDonald’s in Eau Claire and just watched the cars and trucks pass by on the freeway for awhile. As always, thoughts about anything and everything ran through my head…but I wondered How many of these people are traveling cross country like I am? Where did these people come from? Where are they going? What is that truck carrying? I wonder if that family is going home. Stuff just like that filled my head, I don’t know why. It was nice to rest before hitting the road again though.

I drove for two and a half more hours before I became too tired to go on. I didn’t see too much in the dark of course, but it was crazy because there is a point where Interstates 90, and 94 and another one…I think 37…are all co-signed, and share the same four lanes for a few miles. It’s pretty interesting to see three freeways share the same road like that.

I stopped in Madison for the night and got a military discount at a hotel. Too tired to write on, but Chicago and Indianapolis will be on my route tomorrow. Peace.
